Introduction to AIEN Institute, Shanghai Ocean University(Updated in April 2024)

AIEN Institute, jointlyestablished by Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU) and the University of Tasmaniain 2002, is based on the principle of complementary cooperation and mutualdevelopment between the two universities. The Institute now offers twoprograms: Bachelor of Information Systems majoring in information managementand information systems, and Bachelor of Business majoring in marketing, whichwere authorized by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission in 2002 and 2003respectively. The admission of AIEN students is included in the undergraduateenrolment plan of Chinese general colleges and universities. Currently, AIENhas more than 1400 students. From the nineteen cohorts enrolled since 2002,there have been more than 6300graduates up to July 2023. 

In January 2008, the twoprograms were among the first group of Sino-foreign programs in Shanghai to bereviewed by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. AIENInstitute was audited twice by the Australian Universities Quality Agency(AUQA/TEQSA) in 2005 and 2011 respectively, and received favorablereviews. In March 2017, AIEN Institute obtained accreditation certificatesfor the two programs issued by Shanghai Education Evaluation Association(SEEA).

The employment rate for AIENgraduates is higher than 96%. Among the 30% of AIEN graduates seeking advancedfurther study abroad, over 50% of them have been admitted by the world’s top100 universities.

 

Bachelor of InformationSystems (BIS)
The BIS course covers advanced information technology, informationsystems, information management, business management, and business logistics.After becoming equipped with academic English proficiency and expertise inanalysis, design and development in information systems, the graduates areprepared to become highly-qualified professionals in their relevant fields.Upon completing the program, graduates can apply for further study of amaster’s degree, both at home or abroad. They are also readily able to find aprofessional job or other major-related occupation in various sectors.

Bachelor of Business (BBus)

The BBus course coversadvanced marketing theory, marketing expertise, commerce, business management,finance and economics. Throughout the course, the students are equipped with anacademic and professional English proficiency in marketing. Further, thegraduates are prepared to become highly-qualified professionals in theirrelevant fields. Upon completing the program, graduates can apply for furtherstudy of a master’s degree, both at home or abroad, and they also have theskills and knowledge to obtain relevant professional employment in their areaof expertise.
The Campus of SHOU
In August 2008, SHOU moved to a new campus in Lingang New City, aharbor city which is located in the southeast of greater Shanghai, acting as asatellite city center connecting Shanghai Pudong Airport and Yangshan Deep SeaPort. The new city is located near the shore of the ocean, as well asa largelake called Dishui Lake, the largest man-made lake in China and a major tourismand recreation hub.

At the moment, there are fiveuniversities located in close proximity within the Lingang area, with acombined student population of about 60,000. The air is clean and the openspaces are welcoming, which attracts a large number of visitors into the area,particularly those who enjoy outdoor pursuits such as cycling, sailing andrunning. There are a great range of dining, entertainment and shopping optionsavailable in Lingang New City, which provide many choices for students who liveon the campus.

Campus facilities
The SHOU campus is very modern and convenient, with a wide range offacilities and amenities. The university is also equipped with the latestdigital technology, all set against the backdrop of a beautiful and relaxingcampus, including parks, lakes and recreation areas.

There are a number ofrestaurants – both Chinese and western - as well as cafeterias, a supermarket,convenience shops, post office and banking facilities on the campus.

Transportation to central Shanghai

The transport infrastructurein Lingang is developing quickly, and there are now various options providingaccess to the downtown area of Shanghai:

1.     TheSHOU university commuter buses run daily from downtown Shanghai with fiveroutes. One route is from Zhangjiang High Technology Park Metro station to thecampus, leaving at 7.00 am each morning. The return bus departs from the campuseach day at 1.00 pm and 4.30 pm (Friday at 3.30 pm). The commuting time isabout 60minutes and the bus fare is RMB 10. Zhangjiang High Technology ParkMetro station is only 8 stops from People’s Square in the very centre ofShanghai.

2.     The ShanghaiMetro Line 16 runs from Longyang Road Metro Station to two stops in Lingang,Lingang Avenue and Dishui Lake, the latter being the most convenient forarriving at the campus. There is a bus terminal next to the Metro station, whichwill bring travelers from Dishui Lake station to stops next to the campus.

3.     A taxito Pudong International Airport will take around 40 minutes. Another way toreach Pudong International Airport is to take the Metro Line 16 to LongyangRoad Metro Station, which is also the starting stop for Magnetic Elevated Train(with a fastest speed of 431km/h, taking only 7 minutes to reach to theairport.)
